Yahoo Etiquette

The purpose of our Huntley Hills Yahoo email group is to share interesting, important and timely information related to Huntley Hills. Period. Any venting, opinions, personal attacks, jokes, etc, should be sent to individuals only, not the whole group.

Some great recent examples of appropriate emails include local artwork on display, burglaries/cars thefts, plant sale, goodbye party for a neighbor moving away, babysitter needed, Chamblee Farmer’s Market updates, tree removal referral request, etc.

*****

Below are some tips/things to remember before you send an email (we will use these as a general guideline for approving messages).

Try to avoid personal comments: Personal discussions, especially those containing observations or opinions that could be embarrassing or damaging to others (e.g. opinions about individuals) should not be posted to the list. Opinions are great, but please respond directly or limit your comments. Remember that messages posted to the lists are sent to all subscribers; once sent, you have no control over who sees your message.

Mind Your Manners: Think of the basic rules you learned growing up, like saying please and thank you. Respect other members. Please exercise diplomacy, tact, thoughtfulness, self-restraint and respect for others’ point of view. It’s possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Remember that online communication always tends to exaggerate feelings so venting is not good to do on email, especially responding to all. If you have a concern about a particular matter, please follow-up individually and, perhaps, by phone or in person. Think or hold off before you hit send.

Watch Your Tone: Merriam-Webster defines tone as an “accent or inflection expressive of a mood or emotion.” It is very difficult to express tone in writing. You want to come across as respectful, friendly, and approachable. You don’t want to sound curt, aggressive, or demanding.

Use descriptive subject line and be concise: Get to the point of your e-mail as quickly as possible, but don’t leave out important details that will help your recipient answer your query. Messages are archived and connected by subject lines. When others browse their daily email or the archives, they should be able to gather a synopsis of your message from its subject line. Messages with relevant subjects will receive more responses.

And please remember…

** If you send an email to huntleyhills@yahoogroups.com it instantly goes to over 500 people! There are no take-backs, no edit undos. Please read and re-read your email before you hit send.

** When you hit “reply” your email will go to the original sender. When you hit “reply all” it will go to the entire group. Always check and double check the “to” section of your email.

** When replying to emails, please delete all the unnecessary emails/links/etc below your email. Make emails as short as possible!

** If you are overwhelmed by the number of emails, you can subscribe to the “daily digest” and get them all in one email/day. The link to do this is at the very bottom of every email. There is also a link to unsubscribe to the list entirely.

** If you go to the home page, you can search for past email topics (ex. house cleaner, plumber, landscaping, Chamblee Plaza, babysitting, etc.). Please do a search before you send an email – you might just find all the answers you need.

** This email group is not an official part of the Huntley Hills Neighborhood Association (HHNA). Any posts to the group are the opinions of the individual posting the message and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of HHNA, the Board or its members.

THANKS for taking the time to read all of this and we hope you enjoy communicating with all of your neighbors!
