I hope some basic research is done before traffic calming measures are enacted upon. The results of some recent studies may prove surprising to some. For instances, did you know that crosswalks may actually INCREASE pedestrian accidents and that stop signs and speed bumps often INCREASE average driving speeds?

www.stopspeeders.org reviews several common traffic calming solutions. It also has links to a variety of studies - many of which conclude that radar speedcheck signs - those radar speed displays that tell passing drivers how fast they are going - are often the most effective (and cost effective) means of slowing traffic - particularly around school zones and neighborhoods. And unlike speed bumps or rumble strips, they don't increase traffic noise, impede emergency vehicles or wreck the suspension of your car.

A quick Google search reveals that a growing number of communities across the country are ripping out speed humps and radar cameras and replacing them with other, less obtrusive traffic calming devices. It's better to do the research now than to regret decisions after the fact.

Great job, Leslie! Very well presented. Glad to hear that the County is allowing so many options now that they didn't before. Hopefully this will make changes more acceptable. Thanks for all your hard work pulling this together.
